2026 Middle School recommendations for summer reading

by the Middle School library team

We are excited to share this year’s Middle School summer reading program!

To encourage choice, engagement, and a bit of fun, we’ve designed summer reading as a Reading Bingo challenge. Students are encouraged to read widely and explore books that interest them while working toward a goal.

How it works:

  • Students should aim to read at least four books over the summer.
  • Each square on the bingo board represents either a specific book or a reading category.
  • Students may choose to read the suggested book or another book that fits the same category.
  • When students complete four squares in a row (across, down, or diagonal), they’ve earned a BINGO!

Students who bring their completed bingo board to their English teacher in the fall will receive a small treat in recognition of their reading accomplishment.

Recommended titles and categories are featured directly on the bingo board, giving students a range of options as they read. These bingo boards will be available soon on the Middle School library webpage. Students can also access audiobooks and eBooks through the Sora app, which connects to their school account and local public libraries.

In addition to the bingo challenge, we strongly encourage students to read regularly throughout the summer. Taking time to read helps build focus, vocabulary, and confidence—and supports success across all subject areas.

Research from the International Reading Association and the National Council of Teachers of English shows that leisure reading strengthens writing skills, vocabulary, grammar, and overall academic performance. More importantly, we hope students take this time to relax, unplug, and enjoy a good book.

We look forward to celebrating all the reading our students do when we return in September!

Happy reading,
The Middle School Library
