BIG CATS, May 2026: Alex A. '27 and girls track relay team

Lakeside Athletics is proud to announce that Alex A. ’27 of the boys soccer team and the girls 4x200 meter and 4x400 meter relay team of Phoebe P. ’27, Suya M. ’28, Vienna W. ’26 and Vivienne W. ’29 of the track and field team have been named BIG CAT Award recipients for the month of May!

The BIG CAT Award, which recognizes exceptional athletic performance, dedication, and sportsmanship, is a monthly honor presented to two standout Lakeside athletes – one from a boys’ sport and one from a girls’ sport – who exemplify excellence in athletic performance, leadership, and sportsmanship. The selection of the BIG CAT Award recipients is a collaborative process involving coaches and athletic staff. Each month, coaches nominate athletes from their teams who have demonstrated exceptional contributions to their sport, team culture, and overall positive influence on their teammates.

On the soccer field, Alex A. went on a dominant run in the Metro League tournament in the month of May, where he tallied 7 of the team's 10 goals, a performance that proved nothing short of historic. The standout forward saved his best for the biggest stage, netting both goals in the Metro League championship game to deliver the program's first title since 2022. Alex's heroics didn't stop there, as he also scored the game-winning goal in the team's opening round of the state tournament, keeping their postseason run alive. The catalyst all season long, Alex paced the team in goals during the regular season before elevating his game when it mattered most.

“Alex has an incredible ability to show up in big moments,” head coach Mark Szabo said. “He's the kind of player every coach dreams of having. This award is well-deserved, but what makes him special is that he makes everyone around him better."

On the track, The girls relay team of Phoebe P., Suya M., Vivienne W., and Vienna W. earned the May BIG CAT award after a record-shattering spring season that saw the quartet rewrite the school record books… twice. In the 4x200 meter relay, the group broke the school record three times over the course of the season, first running a 1:44.99 on April 30, then improving to a 1:43.04 on May 21, before ultimately setting the current school record of 1:42.75 at the WIAA 3A state championship meet on May 30. The foursome was equally dominant in the 4x400 meter relay, setting the school record with a 3:56.24 on May 23 before shattering their own mark just one week later with a blazing 3:55.67, also at the state championship meet.

“It's hard to put into words what Vivienne, Suya, Phoebe, and Vienna accomplished this year on the track,” said head track and field coach Kian Flynn. “Future Lakesiders are likely going to be chasing their times and accomplishments for years to come. This relay is going to inspire future Lakeside track & field stars in the same way that everyone on the current team was inspired by the incredible way this relay team battled, competed, and held each other up through it all."

Congratulations to Alex and Vivienne, Suya, Phoebe, and Vienna on being named our May 2026 BIG CATS!
