An Independent School • Grades 5-12
June 8: Save the date for 8th-grade graduation

by Scott Riley, 8th grade dean and Middle School languages teacher

We’re looking forward to celebrating your students and marking this important milestone together. Please read carefully for details about the day of the ceremony.

Decorations Committee (9:30 a.m.-12 p.m.)

Students on the Decorations Committee—or anyone interested in helping to decorate—should arrive at the Middle School by 9:30 a.m. and will help set up the celebration spaces until 12:00 p.m.

Students who plan to stay on campus after decorating should bring everything they’ll need for the ceremony later in the day—including their outfit, shoes, and flower. Lunch will be provided in the dining room starting at 11:30 a.m. Students who prefer to go home after the morning session are welcome to do so and return by 3:30 p.m.

Speakers and performers (12-3:30 p.m.)

Students who are speaking or performing in the ceremony should be on campus from 12:00–3:30 p.m. for sound checks and rehearsal. Lunch will be provided in the dining room starting at 11:30 a.m. These students should arrive with all of their graduation items (including their flower and outfit), as they will remain on campus through the ceremony.

All students (arrive by 3:30 p.m.)

All 8th-grade students should arrive at the Evans Theater by 3:30 p.m., each bringing one single flower with a long stem—any variety is welcome. This flower will be placed into a communal vase during the processional, as part of a long-standing tradition that connects the Middle School graduation to the Upper School’s Baccalaureate celebration.

Graduation Ceremony (4-6 p.m.)

The ceremony will begin at 4:30 p.m. and will run until approximately 6:30 p.m. Families are welcome to arrive beginning at 3:30 p.m. and should head directly to the Middle School Gym.

Dress code

Students are encouraged to wear something they’d feel comfortable wearing to a celebration—festive, semi-formal attire is perfect. We recommend shoes that they can confidently walk in, as the evening includes a processional and stairs on either side of the stage.

Guests

There is no formal limit on the number of guests per family, but if you plan to bring more than eight guests, we kindly ask that you let us know in advance so we can plan accordingly.

If you have any questions between now and June 8, please feel free to reach out to 8th Grade Dean Scott Riley directly. We’re so close—and we can’t wait to celebrate your students!
